Ram Hurricane Engine

The New Ram Hurricane Engine vs. HEMI®: What's the Difference?

If you're like many drivers around Newark and Morristown, then chances are you're more than familiar with the Ram truck brand, and specifically its legendary lineup of HEMI® engine options. These gasoline-powered counterparts to the CUMMINS® turbo diesel engines available on Ram Heavy Duty trucks earned their stripes as some of the most dependable and powerful power plants in the pickup truck market. However, Ram has never been a truck brand to rest on its laurels, and with its 2025 model line comes a new era of Ram engine excellence with the new Ram Hurricane engine line. So, what new features are coming to the core of the new Ram trucks you know and love and how does this power plant differ from the venerable HEMI® lineup? Those are questions we're eager to help you answer here at Johnson Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram.

Performance

Now, the main difference between the new Ram Hurricane engine and the HEMI® model is that the latter is a V-Type engine, while the former is a turbocharged inline engine. Of course, there are benefits to both types of engines, and the HEMI® V8 engine is undoubtedly top flight in its own right, but when it comes to raw power output, the new Ram Hurricane engine sets a new standard for the pickup truck market. With up to 420 horsepower from the standard Ram Hurricane engine and up to 540 horsepower from its high-output variant, the new Ram Hurricane engine surpasses the previous HEMI® engine, which topped out at 395 horsepower.

Towing Power

Now, there is one advantage that the old HEMI® V8 has over the new Ram Hurricane engine, and that's overall towing capacity. When properly equipped, the previous generation Ram 1500 could tow up to 12,750 pounds, while the Ram Hurricane engine only tows up to 11,570. Now, for most folks, that's a negligible difference, as both the outgoing HEMI® V8 engine and the incoming Ram Hurricane model offer more than enough towing power for boats, camper trailers, toy haulers, and much more. However, if you need that extra brawn, you'll still find plenty of HEMI®-equipped Ram trucks here at our showroom near Parsippany and Dover, NJ for the foreseeable future.
